Monumental pair of life-size metal garden cranes from Japan, Showa period, heights 179 cm and 164 cm with dimensions 70x30 cm and 43x30 cm, in good condition with slight wear and oxidation, authentic original certificate included.
Description from the seller
A pair of monumental Japanese garden ornaments depicting two life-sized metal cranes standing on their long, slender legs in contrasting poses.
One crane raises its neck and opens its beak skywards, suggesting the bird's distinctive call, while the other gracefully curves its neck downwards, with its beak pointing towards the ground. The bodies are carefully modelled, with individually articulated feathers across the neck and breast and finely detailed wing and tail plumage.
The elongated legs are precisely textured and terminate in outstretched toes, while the dark metal patina displays subtle tonal variations that enhance the sculptural modelling.
In Japanese tradition, the crane, or tsuru, symbolises longevity and good fortune. Their monumental scale and complementary postures give the pair a commanding sculptural presence.
Dimensions:
179 x 70 x 30 cm.
164 x 43 x 30 cm.
Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display. Okimono, popular in the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), were finely crafted sculptures made from materials such as ivory, boxwood, wood, and bronze.
---The okimono are in good condition. There are slight signs of wear and light oxidation consistent with age. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
---The item will be carefully packed and shipped via DHL express or FedEx.
The original certificate of authenticity issued by our gallery will be provided to the buyer.
