Description from the seller
A six-panel byōbu folding screen painted on paper depicting an autumn landscape dominated by a maple tree (momiji 紅葉) with red leaves, accompanied by sparrows that animate the scene.
The composition unfolds with the tree extending across the central panels, evoking the peak of the autumn season. Some small birds are depicted perched on the branches and among the grass, while others are shown in flight.
The overall scene recalls the theme of momijigari (紅葉狩り), the appreciation of autumn foliage, symbolizing the fleeting nature of beauty and the passage of time.
Signed Bunrei, Maekawa Bunrei (1837–1917), with seal at lower left.
The screen is finished with silk borders and a lacquered wooden frame.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
--- The byobu is in good condition, with minor surface stains and wear to the lacquered frame. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
