Description from the seller

Original etching with manual watercoloring by Marc Chagall from 1958.

Numbered 29/100

With certificate of authentication by 'Chagall Research Centre Wuyt.' in the Netherlands

This is the text of the certificate by
drs. Pieter- Hendrik Zuidema, Head of Chagall Research Centre WUYT

Dear Sir,

Yesterday your etching was thoroughly studied.

The signature by initials matches exactly.
The numbering 29/100 is completely correct: Chagall drew and numbered exactly 100 out of all 105 biblical plates at the publisher Tériade's request, from 1/100 to 100/100.
This is therefore his 29th coloring of the biblical plate: "David weeps for Absalom".
The print itself is, without a doubt, a reliable example of the original plate "David weeps for Absalom", of which 100 impressions were printed in total.
From the same plate, 295 copies were printed on Montval paper; these are not colored.
On the back side of your 29/100 etching you will see the plate number namely 73 (of the 105 plates in the Bible series).
Congratulations on this original hand-coloured Chagall etching!

Yours sincerely,

Chagall’s graphic works in Europe

The dreamy compositions of Marc Chagall reflect aspects of the artist's personal and family history, and of Eastern European folklore in general. Flying figures, elements from Jewish tradition, rural life and animals are common motifs. Chagall's oeuvre — including paintings, graphic works, books, ceramics and stained glass — was enormously influential in the development of 20th-century art: his supernatural subjects and emotional gestures bridged earlier avant-garde movements such as Cubism, Fauvism and Symbolism and later modernist styles such as Surrealism. Chagall’s career was disrupted by the world wars, and although the artist traveled between Russia, France and the United States, he managed to exhibit widely during his lifetime, on continental Europe as well as in the USA. His works are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, the Guggenheim Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Chagall also created stained glass windows for the Abbell Synagogue of the Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem, the Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Metz, the United Nations Building in New York City and the St. Stephanus Church in Mainz, Germany.

Pickup is possible; for shipping, the work will be delivered in a frame without glass. The glass would certainly break during transport and damage the work.
Shipping via PostNL with insured value up to €5,500. This applies to all countries worldwide where PostNL offers this service, including outside Europe. Shipping costs are not charged. Any import duties and tariffs are the responsibility of the buyer. After the auction, these matters will be discussed via email.

The work will be wrapped in triplex, then bubble wrap, then multiple layers of thick cardboard to ensure maximum protection.
