AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Mixed media on paper by Russian artist Vasilij Alekseevic Vatagin (Василий Алексеевич Ватагин, 1883/1884-1969). The painting is signed in the lower right corner: the signature in Cyrillic characters reads BaTarnH (Vatagin). A work from the artist's Cubist period in which dynamism, a sense of movement, decomposition of form and the use of geometric shapes are present.
Although Vatagin is best known as a sculptor and scientifically oriented animal painter, during his career he also created several cubo-futurist compositions and geometric abstractions on paper, of which this painting with angular and geometric insets is a perfect example.
Although Cubo-Futurism and the Russian Avant-Garde peaked in the 1910s (before and during the Revolution), Vatagin revisited and codified these geometric abstractions and decompositions of forms in the second half of the 1920s (between 1925 and 1930), transferring the depiction of pure geometric shapes into three-dimensional constructions.
The work is in very good condition and comes from an Italian private collection and is accompanied by the authentication of Dr. Cesare Lisandra, expert in Russian Art at the Chamber of Commerce of Pavia, dated October 31, 2006.
The painting is framed with a minimalist black wooden frame, but to avoid costly international shipping charges, it is possible, on request, to separate the work from its frame and send only the mixed media protected in a cylindrical container.
