AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Enrico Baj (1924-2003) - Lady and Knight - Etching and aquatint, signed in pencil

Refined etching with aquatint attributed to Enrico Baj, master of Italian art in the second half of the twentieth century and a key figure of surrealism and patafisica. The work stages a lady and a knight, in a fantastical and chivalric atmosphere. The figures are deformed and ironic, with spiral ears, mask-like faces, and a mysterious dragon-like creature in the background. These are the typical themes of Baj’s grotesque universe, who, in his “Ladies” and his “Generals,” mocked power and conventions.

The print stands out for its intense greens and sepia tones, the dense hatching and the soft aquatint tonalities, with white lace-like textures reminiscent of trimmings and brocades. The sheet is handmade paper with a deckle edge and shows the plate impression clearly. Signed in pencil by the artist at the bottom right, with another pencil annotation on the left.

Estimated period: around the 1980s. Contemporary art, original print by the author.
