Description from the seller
A superb low six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a Kanô School-style landscape painting.
A dark blue river winds past a wooded shore, where fishing nets have been set out to dry and the bows of moored boats are visible along the water’s edge. Pine trees 松 (matsu) form a dense forest on the opposite bank. Gold-leaf clouds and mist, speckled at their edges, surround the scene. The painting has acquired a rich darkened patina with age.
Executed in colour and ink on mulberry paper and gold leaf, the painting is bordered by two silk brocade bands and encased in a black lacquered wooden frame with protective copper hardware.
Period: Japan – painting 17th–18th century (Edo period).
Dimensions: Height 106.5 cm, total width 277.8 cm (2 x 47.5 cm and 4 x 45.7 cm).
In good restored condition considering its age, with signs of wear and restorations on both sides, including touch-ups to the front and restored paper on the reverse. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen can be mounted flat on a wall and presented as a single work of art, or displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
