Jean Le Gall (1969)
Born in Quimper in 1969, Jean Le Gall is a French artist trained at the Penninghen School, in Paris. After completing his studies, he quickly leans toward interior decoration and develops an eclectic activity at the crossroads of visual arts and performance. He regularly collaborates with theater, cinema, television and the music world, for whom he designs and creates numerous painted décors.
With a remarkable facility for reproducing contemporary works, Jean Le Gall possesses great technical mastery that enables him to respond to very varied projects. He can thus recreate with great precision compositions, motifs and visual universes intended to blend into décors, stages or distinctive spaces.
His work is nourished by the influence of artists such as Sol LeWitt, Peter Halley and Simone Decker, as well as by his deep interest in geometric abstraction. In the late 1980s, a conference followed by a meeting with Victor Vasarely also marked a turning point in his career. He then discovers optical art and becomes passionate about perceptual tricks, depth effects, chromatic vibrations and visual illusions.
Today, Jean Le Gall revisits old canvases, long envisaged only through the prism of decoration. He gives them a new existence and a renewed reading, transforming these works into spaces of pictorial research. Through his work, he seeks to reveal what was already present in these canvases while infusing them with a more personal, contemporary and artistic dimension.
This approach represents a true renaissance for him: that of works that, after having accompanied sets and stories, become pieces in their own right.
