Description from the seller
Beautiful and high-quality collection of three vintage briar (briarwood) tobacco pipes from a prominent French maker. All pipes in this lot were manufactured in the legendary Saint-Claude, the historic heart of French pipe-making craft. This varied set offers a splendid mix of two straight models and one classic bent model.
Note: The shown transparent pipe stands/displays are for illustration in photography only and are not part of the lot.
Specifications of the lot:
• Brands: Butz-Choquin (BC) & Retorne
• Origin: Saint-Claude, France (St. Claude, France)
• Dating: Ca. 1970 – 1990
• Material: First-class briar wood with high-quality vulcanite mouthpieces.
1. Butz-Choquin (BC) "Festival" – Model 1352 (Bent model):
• Elegantly shaped 'Bent Egg' model with a very rich, warm high-gloss grain pattern. A voluminous and comfortable pipe that sits nicely in the hand.
• Equipped with the gold-colored inlaid 'BC' mark on the mouthpiece.
• Sharp stamps on the shank: "Butz-Choquin Festival" and "ST CLAUDE FRANCE - 1352".
2. Butz-Choquin (BC) "Cap-Corse" – Model 1279 (Straight model):
• A sturdy straight billiard model with a strikingly rich, contrasty and dark marbled flame grain finish.
• The mouthpiece features the official inlaid 'BC' mark.
• Clearly stamped on the shank with: "Butz-Choquin Cap-Corse" and "ST CLAUDE FRANCE - 1279".
3. Retorne "Straight Billiard / Panel" (Straight model):
• A very elegant and slender straight model with a warm, smooth gold-brown finish.
• Notable design element: The underside of the head extends into a sleek, faceted (panel) form toward the shank. This gives the pipe a unique modern look.
• Deeply and clearly stamped on the side of the shank with the brand name: "RETORNE".
