Bernard Larsson (born 1939) is a Swedish photographer and photojournalist, born in Hamburg and best known for his remarkable documentation of divided Berlin during the 1960s. After studying photography and photographic design in Munich, Larsson moved to Paris in 1959, where he worked as an assistant to William Klein at Vogue. The construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 prompted him to move to Berlin, where his Swedish passport allowed him unusual freedom to travel between East and West Berlin and photograph everyday life on both sides of the divided city. His observations culminated in the influential 1964 photobook Die ganze Stadt Berlin – Politische Fotos, which combined political history with an intimate, humanist view of Berliners living under the realities of the Cold War. From 1966 to 1968 Larsson worked as a photojournalist for Stern while independently documenting the West German student movement, including Rudi Dutschke, Kommune 1, demonstrations at the Freie Universität Berlin, and the events surrounding the death of Benno Ohnesorg in 1967. His photographs move fluently between street photography, political reportage, portraiture, and social documentary, recording both major historical events and the quieter details of ordinary life. Larsson’s work is now recognised as an important visual record of postwar Germany, the Berlin Wall, Cold War Europe, and the political culture of the 1960s, and has been exhibited extensively by the Museum für Fotografie in Berlin, which also holds examples of his work in its collection.
