Walter Dahn (1954–2024) was a German photographer, painter, and multimedia artist, widely recognized as one of the leading figures of the Neue Wilde (New Wild) movement and an influential representative of German contemporary art. Born in St. Tönis near Krefeld, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf during the 1970s under Joseph Beuys, whose experimental approach to art and emphasis on everyday materials profoundly influenced his artistic development. In 1980, Dahn co-founded the influential Cologne-based artist collective Mülheimer Freiheit, alongside Jiří Georg Dokoupil, Peter Bömmels, and other artists, becoming closely associated with the resurgence of expressive figurative painting in Germany. Although initially celebrated for his Neo-Expressionist paintings, Dahn developed a remarkably diverse artistic practice encompassing photography, drawing, collage, silkscreen printing, film, installation, and experimental music. Photography remained a significant part of his work throughout his career, particularly through his exploration of found imagery, rephotography, ordinary objects, and seemingly insignificant details of everyday life. His photographic approach combined conceptual experimentation with a spontaneous, often humorous and poetic sensibility, transforming familiar subjects into images of unexpected emotional and visual significance. His photographic works were presented in dedicated exhibitions, including Photoworks 1983–89 at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh in 1990 and Fotografie von 1973–2010 in Cologne in 2010. In 2003, the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg published his photographic series Sommer wie Winter (1999–2003), comprising six color photographs exploring the subtle and unusual visual qualities of everyday surroundings. From 1995, Dahn also served as Professor of Painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. His work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and Kunstmuseum Basel. Today, Dahn is remembered as an important figure in postwar German art, whose interdisciplinary practice bridges Neo-Expressionism, conceptual photography, appropriation art, and contemporary visual culture.
