Description from the seller
A powerful, iconic, and rare graphic masterwork by the internationally renowned French artist Tony Soulié (Paris, 1955). Soulié is one of the leading figures driving the influential French art movement 'Nouvelle Abstraction' (New Abstraction) and is worldwide known for his innovative 'photo-paintings'.
This work, titled 'Roaring 20's', dates from 2011 and forms a visually overwhelming tribute to the urban dynamism of San Francisco (North Beach). At the center of the composition is the legendary neon-lit guitar façade of Big Al's and the historic Roaring 20's theater.
Soulié’s unique and patented method is perfectly expressed here: he travels the world to photograph impressive black-and-white images of world cities. In his Paris studio he then transforms these images with expressive, manual intervention. The base of the screen print combines a moody ochre-yellow and black-and-white photo collage, which is masterfully broken up by bright neon-pink hand-painted elements along the edges. This creates a stunning contrast between nostalgic architecture and raw, contemporary street art.
