Festa popolare in una taverna con danzatori e banchetto, 18th century, oil on panel, Netherlands, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
“Popular festival in a tavern with dancers and banquets“
Flemish School
Period: 18th-19th century
Technique: oil on panel
Support: wooden panel
Dimensions: 65 x 50 cm in frame
Panel: 50 x 34 cm
Genre: genre scene / interior of a tavern / popular festivity
Frame: ebony-painted wooden frame with inner decorated fascia and gilded profile
Description
The composition represents the crowded interior of a tavern or inn, animated by numerous figures distributed in small narrative nuclei. The painter builds a true choral representation of popular life.
In the center, the dance dominates: men and women move hand in hand, wearing brightly colored clothes — red, green, ocher, white and brown — that stand out against the dark background of the environment. The setup is deliberately dynamic and theatrical.
On the left, other patrons converse and drink; part of the company watches the dancers, while some characters seem to participate in the music and the celebration. On the right the convivial character becomes even more evident: a laid table gathers men, women and a child around foods, flagons and vessels.
Particularly interesting is the abundance of accessory elements: game and birds hung up, a hare, birds, a braid of food products, containers, fruit, tableware and provisions. At the feet of the figures there are also domestic animals, including a dog and a cat. These details are not merely decorative: they qualify the environment as a place of abundance, consumption, festivity and sociability.
Frame
This is a blackened wooden frame, characterized by concentric black moldings and a wide inner red decorated band on a dark background. A thin gilded fillet visually separates the frame from the painted surface, the XIX century.
Stamp on the back:
Old-punch hallmark on the reverse of the wooden support, of a type compatible with the marks documented on Flemish/Dutch painting panels; about XVII century.
Condition report
Apparent state of conservation from the photographs: overall good, given the period.
The wooden support generally appears to maintain adequate planarity. The painting film shows widespread craquelure, more evident in the dark areas; there are surface abrasions, scratches, small losses and wear. Some passages seem to have undergone previous conservation interventions and localized retouching or repainting cannot be ruled out.
*** Photographic note
The photographic images of the work were made with the aid of professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better readability of the composition, details and painting matter. This lighting can cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only.
The frame is provided free of charge with the work and should be considered an accessory element, not included in the economic valuation of the painting. Due to the natural fragility of old and gilded frames, any damage, detachments, breaks or losses of parts of the frame occurring during transport or shipping cannot be the subject of refunds, compensation or dispute regarding the value of the work. The packaging will nevertheless be prepared with the utmost care to ensure the safest possible transport.
