Description from the seller
LAZZARO PASINI
(Reggio nell’Emilia, September 28, 1861 – Milan, April 29, 1949)
“Paesaggio montano.” (1880/1890)
Fin de siècle
Technique: oil on cardboard
Estimate: 400.00 / 500.00 euros
Dimensions of the work: 28 × 36 cm
Dimensions with frame: about 44 × 52 cm
Signature: signed bottom right; the inscription is currently difficult to read with the naked eye due to the attenuation of the painting material and surface, but becomes more appreciable upon close observation and with a magnifying glass.
Frame: contemporaneous or otherwise antique, in gilded wood, with a metal plaque bearing the inscription “PASINI.”
Description of the work
The painting depicts a broad mountain landscape, built through a succession of natural planes that lead the viewer’s eye from the foreground to the snow-covered massif that closes the composition in the background.
The view is characterized by a deliberately restrained palette, dominated by greens, browns, grays, and subdued blues. The lateral mountain masses frame the central valley, while the snow-capped peaks, bathed in brighter light, constitute the main visual focal point. The sky, clear and luminous, creates a delicate contrast with the deeper tones of the vegetation and foreground reliefs.
The painting presents a naturalistic and atmospheric approach: more than a meticulous description of each element, the emphasis seems to be on conveying depth, distance, and the luminous variations of the Alpine environment. The brushwork appears synthetic and calibrated, particularly effective in the progressive attenuation of chromatic values toward the horizon.
Historical-artistic framing
The work can be placed at the end of the 19th century, within the landscape production of Lazzaro Pasini, an Emilia-born painter active mainly in the final decades of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th.
The choice of small format and cardboard support is particularly well suited to direct-observation painting and study, in which the natural data is reproduced with a relatively free brushstroke and special attention to atmospheric phenomena.
In the present painting, the relationship between the darker, nearer valley zone and the cold luminosity of the snow-capped mountains is especially significant, a device that markedly enhances the depth of the view.
Condition report
The work appears overall in decent condition consistent with its age. The painting surface shows surface deposits, general opacity, and some uneven varnish, particularly evident in close-up photographs and under direct lighting. Minute abrasions and normal surface wear are also observable.
The texture and consistency of the support are clearly perceptible in macro photographs. The signature bottom right is heavily attenuated but still detectable upon close inspection.
The frame shows widespread abrasions, wear, and small losses of the gilded finish, consistent with age and use of the ensemble. A light conservative cleaning of the surface by a qualified restorer is recommended, which could also improve the overall readability of the painting and the signature.
*** Photographic note
The images of the work were taken with the aid of professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better legibility of the composition, details, and painting material. Such lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are intended for illustrative and documentary purposes only.
The frame is provided free of charge as a gift with the work and must therefore be considered an accessory element, not included in the artwork’s monetary valuation. Given the natural fragility of antique gilded frames, any damage, detachment, breakage, or loss of parts occurring during transport or shipment cannot be grounds for reimbursement, indemnity, or dispute regarding the value of the painting. The packing will nevertheless be prepared with the utmost care to ensure, as far as possible, safe transport.
