The Old Drinker
by Gabriël Metsu (1629–1667)
Description of the work
The painting depicts an elderly man seated in a tavern interior, shown facing the viewer head-on as he directs his gaze toward the observer. He wears a heavy brownish-olive coat, a white-collared shirt, and a distinctive reddish hat trimmed with fur.
The figure rests his right arm on a large wooden cask, on which a tap appears for pouring. In his hand he holds a long pipe, while with the other hand he supports a drinking mug. Behind him are a hanging jug and a chalkboard, elements that contribute to defining the lively, popular setting.
The Metsu prototype features precisely these elements: an older man seated beside the cask, a pipe in the right hand, a mug in the left, and a jug hanging on the wall. The Rijksmuseum also notes that the chalkboard records the drinks consumed and identifies the original cask with the Het Rode Hert brewery of Amsterdam.
The scene belongs to the Dutch Golden Age genre painting tradition, in which everyday episodes become opportunities for a careful observation of character, objects, and social habits.
Frame
The work is presented within a gilded wooden frame of 19th-century taste, with an architectural profile and concentric moldings.
Particularly characteristic is the black decoration with vegetal and ornamental motifs, applied to the gilded band at the corners and central areas. The gilding shows widespread abrasions, wear, and small losses that locally reveal the preparation and underlying support.
Condition Report
Overall condition: good for its age.
The panel appears photographically stable overall. The paint surface retains good legibility, and the modeling of the figure, especially the face, remains well defined.
Visible are surface abrasions, small scratches, and tiny losses/local discontinuities of the painting layer, more noticeable in the darker areas.
*** Photographic note
The photographs of the work were taken with professional studio lighting and spotlights to better convey the composition, details, and painting material. This lighting may cause slight color and brightness variations compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only.
The frame is provided free of charge with the work and should therefore be considered an accessory element, not included in the economic valuation of the painting. Due to the natural fragility of antique and gilded frames, any damage, gaps, breaks, or losses to parts of the frame occurring during transport or shipment cannot be the subject of refunds, compensation, or challenges to the work’s value. The packing will, however, be prepared with maximum care to ensure as safe a shipment as possible.
