Pompei, Greek colony of the 7th century B.C., later dominated by the Etruscans and finally by the Romans, owes its name to the Gens Pompeia. Destroyed and completely buried under many meters of ash and pumice during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24, 79 A.D., which lasted two whole days, it remained hidden for almost 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, excavations have brought to light a detailed snapshot of life in a city during the Roman Empire. Today, Pompeii is one of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
