For sale is a large-format Figurative work by the significant Hungarian painter and graphic artist Margit Gráber (1895–1993).
Title: Young Woman, Dressed in Yellow
Year of creation: 1970
Technique: Pastel on paper
Dimensions: 82 × 53 cm
Signature: top right in the image, “Gráber”
Framing: framed
Provenance: Hungarian art dealing / Haas Galéria, Budapest; subsequently private collection
Certificate of authenticity: Certificate from Haas Galéria, Budapest, dated 22 March 2016
The large pastel depicts a young, seated woman in a yellow dress. The frontal figure is defined by a powerful, expressive line. Dark, drawing-like contours enter into a tense dialogue with the restrained yellow, green, gray, and pink tones of the dress and the background.
The psychological presence of the sitter is particularly impressive. The downcast gaze and the calm seated posture confer an introspective, almost melancholic mood to the portrait. The free, gestural execution combines drawing precision with a painterly treatment of color and surface.
The work is signed at the top right and has been documented by the renowned Haas Galéria in Budapest. The certificate accompanying the painting confirms the title, year of creation, technique, dimensions, and signature. The Haas Galéria explicitly states in this certificate that it assumes responsibility for the originality of the work.
Margit Gráber is among the established representatives of 20th-century Hungarian art. Her work encompasses painting and graphics and is closely connected with the development of Hungarian modernism and the artists’ traditions of Kecskemét, Nagybánya, and Szentendre.
This work is especially characterized by its large format of 82 × 53 cm, the elaborated figurative subject, and its documented provenance.
Condition: good aged condition. Frame shows signs of wear consistent with age. The exact condition can be ascertained from the photographs.
The original certificate from Haas Galéria will be provided together with the work.
