Description from the seller
Eastern European School, 18th century
“Portrait of a Noblewoman in Court Dress”
Period: First half of the 18th century, circa 1730/1750
Size: 98 x 73 cm
Artistic field: Painter from Central-Eastern Europe, of Central European culture
Technique: Oil on canvas
Estimate: €3,500/€5,500
Historical-artistic description
Elegant feminine portrait with aristocratic taste, attributable to the portrait production of Central-Eastern Europe in the mid-18th century, within the context of late Baroque and Rococo figurative culture.
The noblewoman is depicted bust-length, three-quarter pose, in a refined court dress in blue tones, enriched with embroidery, lace and ornamental ribbons. A wide pinkish drapery wraps around the shoulders, giving the composition a particularly rich chromatic quality.
The elaborately powdered hairstyle, adorned with a blue bow and a small jewel, constitutes a significant reference element to aristocratic fashion of the late eighteenth century.
The face, characterized by a composed expression and delicate modeling of the flesh tones, reveals a portrait sensitivity attentive to psychological rendering and to the representation of the figure’s social rank.
The dark, uniform background enhances the luminosity of the face and the refinement of the fabrics, in keeping with a widely diffused compositional solution in Central European court portraiture.
The work presents stylistic characteristics compatible with the artistic milieu of 18th-century Central European Europe, with possible references to the Austrian, Bohemian and Hungarian portrait tradition.
Condition: The painting shows superficial craquelure and aging signs compatible with the period. Re-lined
*** Photographic note
Some photographic images of the work were made with the aid of professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better readability of the composition, details, and the paint surface. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared to viewing the work directly. The photographs are solely illustrative and documentary.
The frame is provided free of charge and as a gift with the work and should therefore be considered an accessory element, not included in the economic valuation of the painting. Because of the natural fragility of old gilded frames, any damage, detachment, breakage, or loss of parts of the frame occurring during transport or shipment cannot be the subject of reimbursement, indemnity, or dispute related to the value of the work. The packaging will, however, be prepared with the utmost care to ensure, as far as possible, a safe transport.
