Klaus Josef van de Locht (Millingen, May 18, 1942 – Nijmegen, March 7, 2003) was a German-Dutch sculptor and graphic artist. Klaus van de Locht was born in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, as the son of architect-contractor Andreas van de Locht and Therese Koch. He did not call himself German or Dutch, but a Nieder-Rheinlander. He studied theology for three years in Münster and Munich, but, like his younger brother Peter (1946), chose art. He then studied at the Werkkunstschule in Wuppertal, as a pupil of Peter Schäfer and Rudolf Schoofs. After graduating he lived in London for two years. In 1975 he settled in Nijmegen, where Peter had already moved earlier. Van de Locht created, among other things, assemblages with objets trouvés, gouaches, lithographs, screen prints and sculptures, and his work drew inspiration from erotica, landscapes, labyrinths and mythology. His best-known work is the water labyrinth on Nijmegen’s Waalkade. Like his brother, he also made one of the bollards that stand in the city centre. Van de Locht participated in several exhibitions. From 1989, Van de Locht suffered from MS; he died at the age of 60 from its consequences. By a number of friends, a foundation was established for the management of his estate.
