About the series:
In his series multiexpo, Frank Machalowski explores the boundaries between reality and perception. Through analog multiple exposures on film, he creates photographs that transform familiar landmarks into dreamlike, almost otherworldly visions. The images resemble overlapping memories—fragments of space, time, and emotion condensed into delicate layers of light and movement. The structures of cities, the clarity of architecture, and the subtle rhythm of human presence merge into a poetic whole that suggests more than it reveals.
Machalowski’s analog process gives the series a rare authenticity: each overlap occurs directly in the moment of exposure, without any digital manipulation. As a result, the photographs possess a tactile, almost organic quality. They appear as visual diary entries—images of places not only seen but truly experienced. multiexpo becomes a journey through memory and identity, a tribute to the layered complexity of urban spaces and to the constant interplay between focus and blur, presence and the passage of time.
