Description from the seller
Remo Brindisi - Pastoral Maternity - Acrylic painting on lithographic base - 2010-2015
ARTWORK DETAILS
Artist: Paul Kostabi (United States).
Title of the work: "Pastoral Maternity"
Era: 1970s
Technique and materials: Acrylic painting on lithographic base (stone lithography). Unique piece.
Dimensions: 71 x 51 cm (sheet).
Signature: Signed bottom right. Edition bottom left (as indicated on the Sigma publisher label, the work was completed with the artist's hand intervention and is therefore to be considered a unique piece).
Stamps: Sigma dry stamp. Back of the piece bears the Galleria d'Arte Piero Della Francesca, Arezzo stamp.
Conditions: Fair. Very vivid and beautiful colors. Full margins (barely) untrimmed, typical of handmade artisanal paper created with a "hand machine" process. There are signs of blooming and some stains, which in our opinion do not compromise the beauty of the work. It was decided not to proceed with restoration or washing in order not to consume the brushstroke, which, as the images show, is very clearly visible. Photos are an integral part of the description). Minor flaws attributable to the artistic/artisanal nature of the piece, a small crease at the top right area that is easily concealable once the work is framed.
DOCUMENTATION
Certificate of authenticity from Galleria d'Arte Piero Della Francesca.
EXHIBITIONS
Graphic art - Selected - Galleria d'Arte Piero Della Francesca, Arezzo, March 2025.
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
We offer at auction a vibrant and intense work by Remo Brindisi, entitled "Pastoral Maternity" and datable to the 1970s. Our Gallery has collaborated directly with the Master, who has taken part in several of our exhibitions, and today continues to actively handle his work.
The work addresses one of Brindisi's most dear and iconic themes: motherhood and the rural world, understood as primal symbols of affection, roots, and humanity. Technically, we are dealing with a lithographic stone base that the artist skillfully and extensively touched up by hand with acrylic paints. This direct painting intervention gives the work texture, uniqueness, and the characteristic energy and expressionistic drive that distinguish the Master's unmistakable stroke. A very rare and sought-after piece.
BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL NOTES ON THE ARTIST
Remo Brindisi (Rome, 1918 - Lido di Spina, 1996) was one of the most incisive and recognizable figures of 20th-century Italian painting. Trained in Penne, L'Aquila, Rome, and Urbino, he developed over his life a highly personal language in which the lessons of Expressionism, cubist-derived decompositions, and informal tendencies converge.
His long and prolific career was marked by a strong social and civil commitment, translated on canvas through cycles dedicated to universal themes (motherhood, peace, the oppressed, the shepherd figure). Brindisi participated in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale, establishing an international reputation. Also of fundamental importance was his activity as a collector and patron, culminating in the founding of the "Museo Alternativo Remo Brindisi" in Lido di Spina, an avant-garde house-museum that gathers masterpieces of international contemporary art, later donated to the public.
