The Grand Book of Napoleon - Volume 1+2
2 volumes in a jeweled slipcase
Volume 1: The Rise and the Consulate (1769–1804)
The first volume is devoted to Bonaparte's youth and his rapid rise amidst the turmoil of the French Revolution.
• Corsica and youth: origin, family and education at the military academies (Brienne).
• The General of the Revolution: early military successes (the Siege of Toulon) and the famous Italian campaign (1796–1797).
• The Egyptian Expedition: the campaign in the Orient, which, although militarily failed, sparked a scientific and cultural boom.
• The Consulate (Le Consulat): the coup of 18 Brumaire VIII (1799) and Napoleon's role as First Consul. Focus on the political and administrative reorganization of France (centralization, introduction of the Code Civil, the Concordat with the Church).
Volume 2: The Empire, the Fall and the Exile (1804–1815/1821)
The second volume covers the years as the undisputed ruler of Europe as well as his bitter end.
• The First Empire (Le Grand Empire): The coronation as Emperor in 1804 at Notre-Dame and the establishment of the imperial court.
• The great campaigns: Documentation of the Napoleonic wars (Sieges at Austerlitz, Jena, Friedland) and the reordering of the European map.
• The turning point and decline: The disastrous Russian campaign (1812), the Wars of Liberation and the subsequent abdication in 1814 with the first exile to Elba.
• The Hundred Days & Saint Helena: The triumphant return, the final defeat at the Battle of Waterloo (1815) as well as the last years of life and the death in exile on the Atlantic island of Saint Helena (1821).
The sumptuous work edited by Jean Mistler, “Le grand livre de Napoléon” (Hachette, 1968), stands out for its elaborate and richly illustrated production.
The volumes contain hundreds of visual documents that bring the Napoleonic era to life.
Condition: light signs of wear to the binding, interior: clean and with a firm binding
