Marinus Bies’s *Donker landschap* is an original, hand-signed oil painting on canvas depicting a landscape, dating from 1940–1950 and originating in the Netherlands.
Description from the seller
This painting shows a rural landscape with an old farm by the water, under a dark, cloudy sky. The painter has used dark earth tones, such as brown, green and black, combined with warm yellowish hues on the horizon. This light forms a beautiful contrast with the dark surroundings and is reflected in the water, giving the landscape more depth. The loose brushstrokes and the strong contrasts between light and shadow give the painting a calm, yet mysterious atmosphere. The work evokes a sense of quiet and loneliness and seems to capture a transitional moment between day and night. Through the simple composition and the subtle color usage, the viewer is invited to pause and reflect on the beauty of the landscape and the mood of the moment.
Executed in oil on canvas

Dimensions of the work: 100 x 136 cm
Artist's Biography
Marinus Bies (Aarle-Rixtel, 1894–1975), full name Martinus Johannes Bies, was a Dutch painter and draftsman whose oeuvre is strongly connected to the Brabant landscape, and in particular the Peel. He studied with Arnold Marc Gorter and Jan Kruysen and developed a strong, freely painted visual language in which landscape, color and atmosphere are central. From 1933 he worked as a professional artist. In 1938 and 1939 Bies participated in group exhibitions; during this period the Van Abbemuseum acquired a Peel landscape by him. His work was subsequently exhibited at the Rijksmuseum as well. To mark his hundredth birth anniversary, Museum Kempenland Eindhoven organized an exhibition around his oeuvre in 1994. In 2025, his fiftieth death anniversary in the Peel region was commemorated with a series of exhibitions in which his landscape art took center stage.
