Historical-artistic description
A valuable painting from the Italian school of the second half of the 17th century, depicting the young Saint John the Baptist seated on a red drape within a suggestive forest landscape, characterized by distant mountainous reliefs and delicate light-openings.
The composition, clearly inspired by classicism, stands out for the soft modeling of the flesh tones, the expressive vivacity of the face, and the refined chiaroscuro contrast between the figure and the landscape. The color sensitivity and figurative approach suggest references to the Emilian painting tradition of the 17th century, with particular affinity to the Bologna culture of Renassiance-derived lineage.
Historical-artistic note
A work of notable artistic value and historical interest, attributable to the Bologna painting culture of the second half of the 17th century (approximately 1650–1680). The piece is distinguished by the quality of the modeling, refined color sensibility, and the intense expressiveness of the figure, elements that recall the great Emilian classicist tradition of Renanian origin. The composition and stylistic characteristics suggest belonging to a high-level pictorial context, making it a significant testimony to 17th-century artistic production, deserving further attributive study.
State of conservation
The work shows widespread craquelure on the painted surface, consistent with a natural aging process. The canvas appears to have undergone a previous lining intervention.
Ideal for collecting and investment
- The existing frame is included with the sale of the work as a courtesy. Any transport damage related to the frame alone cannot be the subject of refund or dispute.
Photographic note: Some images of the work were professionally taken with the aid of artificial lighting (studio spotlight) in order to clearly highlight the painting characteristics, the material, the color, and the conservation state of the painting. The perception of colors and brightness may therefore vary slightly compared with viewing the work under natural or ambient light.
