Description from the seller
Fascinating and rare terracotta stoneware sculpture titled "The Oracle of Silence," signed by the renowned Italian master sculptor and ceramist Mimmo Silvestro Sormani (1936-2015). The work dates to roughly 1970, a full period of transition and expressional maturity for the artist.
The sculpture develops vertically with organic and zoomorphic lines inspired by Brutalist and Modernist aesthetics. It features a characteristic through-hole and an asymmetrical mouth that confer dynamism and mystery to the figure. Matte, high-quality glaze with a rich texture and deep, iridescent shades ranging from dark blue to antracite gray, typical of high-temperature stoneware firing.
The base bears the artist’s iconic incised geometric monogram, the extended signature "Sormani," together with the inscriptions "ITALY" and "HAND MADE" impressed raw on the ceramic body before firing. The work presents in excellent vintage condition, with no cracks, chips, or restorations. The patina of time is perfect and enhances its original tactile texture. Mimmo Silvestro Sormani was a famous Italian sculptor, painter, and master artist, a prominent figure in the plastic arts research of the second half of the 20th century. Trained at the Institute of Art and later at the Academy, he devoted his life to experimenting with matter and teaching, holding prestigious professorships and training entire generations of ceramists and artists. Throughout his long career he received numerous prizes and official recognitions in exhibitions and competitions dedicated to avant-garde artistic ceramics.
His production stands out for the fusion of primordial forms, organic elements of nature, and a metaphysical geometric abstraction. His works, in addition to having passed through renowned art galleries (such as Milan’s historic Libreria Bocca), are exhibited in prestigious private collections and public exhibition spaces devoted to 20th-century artist ceramic art.
Sormani also created monumental installations and monumental sculptures placed outdoors and inside important public buildings, city halls, and religious complexes in Lombardy, consolidating his status as a master of Italian plastic arts. This sculpture perfectly represents his celebrated and sought-after poetic stance tied to pure form, silence, and the primordial power of the earth.
