An 18th-century oil painting from Italy, titled “Anatre in un paesaggio fluviale”, attributed to Giovanni Crivelli detto il Crivellino and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
“Anatre in an Italian river landscape”
Giovanni Crivelli, called Crivellino (Milan ? - Parma 1760) Attributed to
Oil on canvas / 1750-1760
- Dimensions: 69 x 46 cm in non-contemporary frame
Canvas: 59 x 36 cm
The composition depicts a group of ducks arranged along the banks of a body of water, immersed in a complex wooded landscape. At the center, the bird with wings spread introduces an element of movement and constitutes the visual fulcrum of the scene, while the other animals are captured in more gathered and natural poses.
Attribution reason
The attribution to Giovanni Crivelli, a painter specialized in the representation of animals and particularly appreciated for compositions with birds, seems plausible given the subject’s type, the scenographic setup and the painting language.
Characteristic are the naturalistic interest in the different species and in the plumage, the arrangement of the animals in the foreground in varied poses, the use of a palette dominated by browns, earth tones, ochres and deep greens and, above all, the inclusion of the animals within a wide and atmospheric landscape, in which heavily shadowed areas contrast with the bright openings of the horizon.
Particularly significant is the lively rendering of the central duck with wings spread, which transforms a seemingly quiet naturalistic scene into a dynamic and theatrical composition, an element coherent with the Lombard animal painting tradition of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries to which Crivelli belongs.
Condition report
The work is re-framed, in good overall conservation condition compatible with the antiquity of the piece.
Craquelure and natural settling of the painting surface are observed, with slight inhomogeneities and signs of time. Plausible, as is frequently the case with paintings of this period, old conservational interventions, cleanings and limited repainting.
*** Photographic note
The photographs of the work were taken with professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better legibility of the composition, details and painting matter. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared to viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only.
*** Note regarding the frame:
The frame is attached to the work as a courteous gift and without any monetary value attribution. Given its antiquity and natural fragility, any damage, detachment, breakage or loss occurring during transport and attributable exclusively to the frame cannot be a basis for refund or compensation.
Ideal for collecting and investment
With certificate of sale and legitimate provenance in accordance with the law - Expertise
Professional packing and insured shipment at the estimated value
