Description from the seller
Nuccio Fontanella (1936–2005) – Expressionist / Brutalist sculpture of a rearing bronze horse on a stone base
A refined and powerful patinated bronze sculpture by Italian artist Nuccio Fontanella (Brusegana, Padua, 1936 – Rome, 2005), depicting a dynamic, highly stylized horse.
The work is a perfect example of Fontanella’s artistic vision, characterized by slender, expressionist forms that evoke the Brutalist style and the influence of great twentieth-century masters such as Alberto Giacometti and Germaine Richier. The restless modeling of the material and strong sense of movement give the animal an almost primordial energy. The contrast between the bronze surfaces, enhanced by beautiful golden highlights from the raised polishing, and the rough, porous appearance of the fine stone base on which it stands makes this sculpture a piece of striking visual impact.
Fontanella was an important figure in twentieth-century Italian sculpture, known for his mastery in capturing anatomical tension and expressive dynamism through distinctive, highly detailed castings.
