** H.A.M. Roelants (1827-1907) founded his company on 10 October 1849 in Schiedam at the Lange Haven, where he started as a bookseller. The company would become a real family business.
The company was known for the publication of works by Dickens and the Schiedam poet Piet Paaltjens (François Haverschmidt). The publishing house was very versatile: the publications ranged from works by Vondel to the magazine De Kinder-kleeding. In the 19th century Roelants was one of the major publishers of children's books. In 1852 he started the series ‘Klassiek letterkundig panthéon’. From 1896 he was the publisher of the Schiedamsche Courant and from 1898 of De Kampioen, the magazine for members of the ANWB. A lot of printed matter was produced as well, such as tram tickets, trading stamps and entrance tickets. In 1970 the company became part of Nijgh & Van Ditmar. In 1981 the publishing activities were transferred to Nijgh Periodieken BV, the printing activities continued under the name Speciaaldrukkerij Roelants. In 1999 the activities were transferred to Europrint in Veendam, which had been taken over one year earlier.
