Second edition of this illustrated book on fashion expanded with new woodcut plates and beautifully coloured (21 compared to 17 in the original from 1875) after the watercolours of F. Lix, and tailpieces by Scott. Each depicts 4 outfits illustrating the evolution of fashion from the Gauls to the 1880s.
Very beautiful copy, preserved in its superb publisher’s hardcover binding in red percaline, front cover plaque by Souze in black and gold, with a decoration of interlacing leaves and vines, spine adorned with a similar decoration, back cover decorated in blind-stamping. Three gilt edges.
Binding in good condition, faded spine, small fragment missing in the headcap. Sound hinge. Very fresh interior for the colour plates, light foxing on the pages of
text. In good condition.
Challamel was one of the most prominent French historians during the second half of the 19th century. Alongside the great themes of the history of France (the Fronde, the Revolution,
Napoleon, etc.), he also wrote books foreshadowing the new history of the 20th century: Histoire de la mode en France (1874) and
Histoire de la liberté en France (1886). ?
