Historically:
The K.W.St.E. had 2 routes with very steep slopes. Because the loads being transported steadily grew larger they continually required stronger locomotives. In 1917 they tested the six-coupled K-Class. Their outer cylinders were coupled to the fourth axle and the two inner cylinders were coupled to the third. Test runs proved these locomotives could function perfectly on steep routes.
