Rare 19th-century first edition of this book on chiromancy illustrated with explanatory figures in the text, also with chapters on the Kabbalah, physiognomy, astrology, phrenology, studies of famous figures including Alexandre Dumas, Lamartine, Gérôme, Gounod, Corot etc. -

The author, Adolphe Desbarolles (Paris 1801-Paris 1886), painter, was the modern apostle of chiromancy. Close friend of the occultist Eliphas Levi, his
books on the subject are still considered today to be references.

Contemporary red leather half-binding, smooth spine adorned with gilded stamping. C.M.M. monogram at the tail.

Good copy, fresh and clean interior, slightly yellowed interior, with scattered foxing, dense on just a few leaves. Binding:
Tight, worn leather, rubbed on the headcap and joints.
