Ha preso parte alla progettazione dei personaggi per molti dei più grandi cartoni animati di Tatsunoko, tra cui Gatchaman, Hutch the Honeybee e Cashaan: Robot Hunter. 

Nel 1984 ha pubblicato la sua prima raccolta di dipinti, Maten (Evil Universe). Ha continuato a collaborare con numerosi scrittori, creando quasi 20 libri illustrati che hanno venduto milioni di copie.

Il suo primo progetto come concept artist per videogames, Final Fantasy, è diventato un successo internazionale. 

Ha presentato una mostra multimediale del suo personaggio Hero presso la Angel Orensanz Foundation di New York City. 

Amano ha presentato (con Neil Gaiman) la nuova edizione della popolarissima serie Sandman.

Questa è una delle illustrazioni originali realizzate nel novembre 2022 all’interno dell' Area Performance del festival internazionale Lucca Comics & Games.
