This Elephant is in a new and unused condition, will be delivered with original packaging and Certificate of Authenticity.

This Vitra elephant was originally designed in the early 1940s by Charles and Ray Eames. By the time Charles and Ray Eames spent many years developing and refining a technique for bending three-dimensional shapes from plywood and multiplex. Gradually they designed a series of furniture and sculptures. Of all those original designs, the two-piece elephant turned out to be the biggest technical challenge because of its strong multiple curves. The techniques of that time were not able to realize a series production of the elephant. The 14 year old Lucia Eames, daughter of Charles, received a prototype that was later loaned out for an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. Even today this prototype is still in the possession of the Eames family.

In the beginning of the 2000s the Eames Elephant was released in plastic, making it available for the originally intended target group: children. Hence, the elephant can be used as an iconic design piece but also as a toy.
