On the basis of "Dorchester Days", Eugene Richards became a member of Magnum Photos in 1978 and left to work independently in 1994. His style has set the standard for leading photojournalists such as James Nachtwey and Gilles Peress.

Eugene Richards himself openly acknowledges his debt to Robert Frank, Eugene Smith and Leonard Freed. The lineage and succession represent documentary and "street" photography at their highest standard of achievement.
