Marvelous Mwana Pwo mask of the Chokwe people living in Angola.
Ex collection of the late Andrzej von Staranburg Niedenthal, a wellknown collector in London.

The Mwana Pwo female mask is a traditional mask of the Chokwe people, who live in the regions Angola, Congo and Zambia. It represents the ideal beauty of women in the Chokwe culture. The mask dances at ritual ceremonies as funerals, initiations, weddings and harvests.

This wooden mask has a very special hairdo, which is divided in 4 parts, ending in a tail.
Traditional scraifications on the face. 
Strands of beads through the hairdo with cowry shells in the middle.
Brass nails on forehead and chin.
Wide mouth and flat ears.
Metal earrings.
Vegetal material.
