A very nicely made Republic period Yixing teapot, in a shape called: Square Bamboo Segment Pot 四方竹段壶.  The body of the pot is made of a square bamboo stem, symmetrical up and down, with a four-sectioned spout, shaped like bamboo branches with leaves. The looped bamboo handle with has it's leafs fluttering in the wind. The recessed lid can be rotated in all directions and fit tightly. The twisted bamboo on the top is freely sculpted, with a few bamboo leaves attached on both sides. Viewed from all angles, it has an air of elegance.

Stamped at the inside of the lid with 冯桂林 Feng Guilin.

Feng Guilin (1906-1942), a native of Yixing, was a famous teapot artist for his innovation. Most of his works were decorated ware (hua huo), but in the style of natural and refined. From 1926 to mid-1930s, Feng was a commissioned potter in Wu Desheng pottery company in Yixing, and from there he started his innovative teapot design. Most of Feng's works bared the mark of Jin Ding (Golden vessel) Wu Deshen (the purple clay pottery company) on the bottom.

His works are full of various gestures, natural and lifelike, and cleverly conceived. The Square Bamboo Segment Pot is one of them. Feng Guilin was influenced by the painter, who he invited to draw teapot shapes. When he went to Huanglong Cave in Hangzhou to collect scenery, he suddenly saw a square bamboo. Impressed by it's unusual shape, he came up with the idea of ​​​​creating a square bamboo pot.

The bottom has a Jin Ding (Golden vessel) commercial mark from Wu Deshen (the purple clay pottery company), established at Yixing in 1916. As a company, the mark was used under the bottom of commissioned works of art by artists. Many famous Yixing artists such as Li Baozhen, Feng Guilin, Yu Guoliang and Zhu Kexin, etc. were commissioned by the company. The company closed down by the start of the Sino-Japanese war in 1937, and the use of company's mark ended in 1939.
