Anthonij "Anton" Rudolf Mauve (September 18, 1838 – February 5, 1888) was a prominent Dutch realist painter and a leading figure in the Hague School movement. He was also a cousin by marriage to Vincent van Gogh, whom he profoundly influenced. Born in Zaandam, Mauve moved to Haarlem at the age of sixteen to apprentice under Pieter Frederik van Os, known for his depictions of cattle, and later studied with Wouter Verschuur, a master of equine subjects. Alongside fellow artist Paul Gabriel, Mauve frequently painted en plein air, immersing himself in the Dutch countryside. By age twenty, he was working in the artist colony of Oosterbeek, a hub for plein-air painters. In 1871, he established a studio in The Hague, where he also provided artistic guidance—and emotional support—to the young Vincent van Gogh. Mauve played a foundational role in Van Gogh’s early development, and after Mauve’s death, Van Gogh honored his memory with the poignant painting Souvenir de Mauve (1888), which he sent to Mauve’s widow.

In 1882, Mauve began spending his summers in the village of Laren, eventually relocating there permanently in 1885. By this time, his work had achieved widespread acclaim and was highly sought after by collectors in the Netherlands and abroad. Today, his paintings are held in numerous prestigious museum collections around the world, including:
