Phillipe Salnave - In de Jungle

Salnave Phillipe Auguste (1908) was a lawyer and magistrate who wrote books about law and poetry. He began painting at the age of 52 to help pay for the upbringing of his seven children. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1960 and became famous for his jungle scenes. He is often called the “Customs Officer” of Haitian art, after the famous French naive painter Henri Rousseau. Philippe-Auguste, one of the best-known Haitian artists of the second generation, is well educated and eloquent. Now mainly known for his lush jungle scenes with voodoo figures, he also painted still lifes, carnival scenes and the exotic street market of Haiti. Salnave Philippe-Auguste passed away on June 2, 1989 in Port-au-Prince.
