Massive Japanese Hand-Painted Porcelain Geisha Bijin Figure, late Meiji/early Taisho
A very impressive and massive Japanese Arita porcelain geisha figure from the early 20th century (late Meiji/early Taisho), standing almost 60 cm tall. The figure is beautifully hand-painted in the traditional Arita / Imari style, with an elaborate floral kimono decorated with peonies, butterflies, scrolling blue motifs and turquoise enamel-style panels. The richly decorated cobalt blue obi at the back is highlighted with gilt floral ornamentation, adding depth and contrast to the piece.
The figure is finely modelled in an elegant traditional pose, with a delicate painted face, glossy black hair and graceful movement in the folds of the kimono. Due to its large scale, vivid colours and sculptural presence, this piece makes a striking statement display object and would suit both a serious Japanese porcelain collection and a decorative interior setting.
A rare large-scale Japanese Arita porcelain figure from the Meiji era, combining strong decorative presence with fine hand-painted detail. Its size, subject and rich palette make it a highly eye-catching collector’s piece.
