Although an unclassified vintage, like all the great Pomerol vintages, Petrus in Bordeaux is the most famous and also the most prestigious of all red wines. The legend began at the end of the 19th century. The Arnaud family owned the estate and already enjoyed a reputation that would never wane. Edmonde Loubat gradually bought the shares of the Société Civile du Château Petrus from this Bordeaux family starting in 1925. She became the sole owner in 1945. Dynamic and aware of the exceptional potential of this "small" vineyard (approximately 6 hectares - currently 11.5 hectares after the purchase of a plot from Château Gazin), she found an ideal complement in 1947 in the person of Jean-Pierre Moueix, a Libourne wine merchant from a Corrèze family. Vintage after vintage, the estate's reputation grew.
This duo, with its remarkable commercial skills, would take the estate to new heights from the early 1950s. Known in France but especially renowned abroad, bottles of Petrus graced the engagement table of Elizabeth II. In the 1960s, the Kennedy family considered it the greatest red wine in Bordeaux, and Petrus immediately became the benchmark for the American market and entered the world of fine wines. It was also during this period that Jean-Pierre Moueix began to become involved in the winemaking process. He bought half of the estate in 1964 and the entire estate in 1972, passing it on to his son Jean-François. Few families in Bordeaux are now as influential as the Moueix family, who own nine other properties in Pomerol, including Château Trotanoy and Château La Fleur-Pétrus.
This estate enjoys a terroir that is absolutely unique in Bordeaux: a soil composed almost exclusively of swelling black clay on a hill that rises 40 meters high. Merlot finds its preferred soil here, making up nearly 96% of the vineyard's grape varieties. The remaining 4% is planted with Cabernet Franc, most of which is not included in the final blend. Petrus produces only grand vin (the rest of the production is declassified), and obviously no white wine. Harvests are manual and aging lasts an average of 20 months (100% new barrels).
