" En 1955, Robert Frank sillonne les États-Unis. Appareil photo à la main il immortalise les instants de vie des Américains qu’il croise sur sa route : une serveuse dans un diner, un homme tatoué en train de faire la sieste, des ouvriers au travail, un cireur de chaussures, des fêtards, des amoureux, des motards, la route elle-même… Il ne s’agit pas d’un reportage mais d’un ensemble de notes prises sur le vif : Robert Frank fait naître une nouvelle iconographie où des visages anonymes s’amalgament au bord de routes tristes, dans les excroissances urbaines ou les vides d’un territoire démesuré. Les lieux et les visages pris à la volée sont souvent flous, la composition est parfois décentrée. La fréquence et la profondeur des noirs creusent les images, leur conférant un pouvoir d’abstraction. Pour la première fois en 1958, une sélection de 84 photographies en noir et blanc est publiée par Robert Delpire… dans l’indifférence générale. Jugé triste, pervers, voire subversif à l’époque, le livre devient progressivement un classique de la photographie. 60 ans après sa première publication, l’ouvrage, toujours très actuel, reparaît dans une édition revue et corrigée par Robert Frank lui-même. Couverture, format, papier et traitement des photographies ont été modifiés et se rapprochent de l’édition américaine. La préface de jack Kérouac bénéficie d’une nouvelle traduction de Brice Matthieussent.
Robert Frank, né à Zurich en 1924, quitte la Suisse en 1947 et s’installe aux États-Unis. Puis ses multiples voyages le conduisent en Amérique du Sud, en Espagne, en Angleterre et à Paris. Photographe majeur dans les années 1950 et 1960, il se consacre ensuite au cinéma expérimental avant de revenir progressivement à la photographie dans les années 1970. "

Unique Objects

Occasionally, two different bidders may show up in the bidding history with the same bid amount. This occurs when one user's bid is exactly the same as an automatic (maximum) bid placed by another user earlier. Since the auto-bid was placed first, this takes preference. The bidding history will show both bids, with the auto-bid ranked as the higher of the two.
