Omega Constellation  Electronic F300 Hz Chronometer Ref. 198.765, sold in 1972

A stainless steel electronic ‘tuning-fork’ cushion form wristwatch with original numbered manufacturer’s certification and documentation

An exceptional example of the pioneering Constellation  Electronic, this Omega wristwatch is in superb original condition .

As threat of the electronic watch to the traditional mechanical watchmakers of Switzerland became ever more apparent, a conglomeration Swiss manufacturers (including Rolex, Patek Philippe and Omega) founded the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH). Between them, the Swiss makers developed the Beta 21, an 8khz quartz module with 13 jewels. Prototypes were released in 1967 before production began in earnest in 1968. In 1972, Omega introduced the present reference, 198.030, which included the Omega calibre 1250, a so-called ‘tuning-fork’ electronic movement which was made under licence from Bulova. One of the disadvantages of the Beta-21 had been its size and the noise emitted when in operation – Omega proudly noted that this new f300 chronometer movement was “a little thinner than some of the others, it hums more quietly, and most important its resonator has a shape unique to Omega” [You and Your Omega booklet c.1973.] At the time of its launch, this was a state of the art wristwatch with phenomenal accuracy. Whilst the external styling of this model is similar to mechanical alternatives offered by Omega, the exacting, linear design of this watch’s dial, together with its precisely graduated outer track calibrated to 5ths of a second, hinted at the movement’s exceptional qualities. The movement, which has the typical pink gilded Omega finish to the backplate, also includes a hack feature and quick date change facility.

[M] Omega calibre 1250 electronic tuning fork movement, 12 jewels, 300hz  silvered satin finished dial, applied baton indexes with ribbed surfaces and polished facets, luminescent dots above, luminescent baton hands, centre seconds, black outer track calibrated to 5ths, aperture for date . stainless steel cushion-from case, the upper case with satin finish and flat polished bezel, screw-down satin finished case back. case, dial, movement, crown and crystal signed OMEGA .
