- Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was a Latvian-born American painter best known for his role in the development of Abstract Expressionism, and more specifically for his contributions to Color Field painting. His mature works are characterized by large-scale compositions of soft-edged, floating rectangles of color, designed to evoke emotional and spiritual responses. Rothko believed that art should be a deeply human, even sacred experience, capable of expressing fundamental emotions like tragedy, ecstasy, and doom.

Rather than focusing on form or narrative, Rothko sought to create meditative spaces. His later works often featured dark, brooding color palettes and immersive canvases meant to engulf the viewer in stillness and contemplation. He rejected the idea of being labeled an abstractionist, insisting instead that his work was about the human condition.

His work "Untitled" (1962) is a quintessential example of Rothko’s mature style. It features two blurred, luminous rectangular forms a deep red upper block and an orange lower one—set against a dark maroon field. The transitions between the shapes are subtle, soft, and almost glowing, giving the impression of suspended, breathing color. The simplicity of form contrasts with the intensity of emotion that Rothko intended to provoke.

This kind of work is not about what you see, but what you feel Rothko described his paintings as “dramas” of color and space.

Mark Rothko's works are among the most valuable in the world of modern art. His paintings have broken multiple auction records: "Orange, Red, Yellow" (1961) sold for $86.9 million in 2012; some works from the 1950s and early 1960s have sold privately for over $100 million.

His works are housed in major institutions such as MoMA, the Tate, and the National Gallery of Art, and his legacy endures as a master of spiritual abstraction.
