Tapisserie Flandres XVIIe

This exceptional 17th-century tapestry fragment, depicting the moment when Mercury summons Aeneas to leave Carthage, can stylistically be linked to the acclaimed "Dido and Aeneas" series woven in the Antwerp workshop of Michael Wauters (fl. 1658-1678). The cartoons for this series are attributed to the influential Italian artist Giovanni Francesco Romanelli (1610-1662), a student of Pietro da Cortona. 
The tapestry's rich, sculptural border, is a hallmark of the sophisticated Flemish Baroque style prevalent in these prestigious workshops.
The specific iconography, with Mercury appearing to the armed hero Aeneas, holds a striking compositional similarity to an etching by Wenceslaus Hollar after a design by the court artist Franz Cleyn (1582-1658), who was the chief designer of the English Mortlake Tapestry Manufactory. 
While the tapestry's origin is firmly rooted in the Flemish tradition, its subject matter's parallel in the Mortlake workshop's design vocabulary highlights the shared artistic heritage and cross-pollination of ideas between the two leading centers of European tapestry production in the 17th century.
