23,5 x 15 cm. Half-title: Don Quixote de la Mancha. 4 vols. [vol.I: [i-v], vi-lxxxviii, [1], 2-376 pp.; vol.II: [i-v], vi-vii, [viii], [1], 2-403 pp., vol.III: [i-v], vi-xvi, [1], 2-370 pp.; vol.IV: [i-v], vi-viii, [1], 2-440 pp.]. Hand-colored frontispiece, hand-colored illustrations. Original grey boards with printed spine labels.

Included in vol.I is a brief Life of Cervantes, extracted from Gregorio Mayans y
Siscar’s “Life of Cervantes” (1737). The illustrations are aquatints from designs by
John] Heaviside Clark, unlisted but captioned; some signed by the artist. Illustrations for
ech volume sewn in at the end of the preliminary pages, 6 in vol. I, 3 [of 4] in Vol. II, 5
each in vols. III and IV. The work printed by J. Brettell, Rupert St., London. An identical
version was published in 1819 by W. Stockdale, also printed by Brettell with the
plates still bearing the M’Lean imprint.

Front board of vol. I detached, flyleaf loose, front board of vol. IV loose, flyleaf
missing. All covers worn. Printed armorial bookplate of Jonas Lied (1881-1969)
attached inside front boards.
