Cross of Honor of the Baltic Armed Forces with Sword

The Cross of Honor of the Baltic Landeswehr was established in 1920. This decoration was awarded with and without a standing sword to former members of the Baltic Landeswehr. It is assumed that frontline soldiers received the Cross with Sword. The Cross was awarded with a certificate, the award number of which is noted at the bottom. The number of awards is approximately 3,200 with a sword and approximately 1,600 without a sword.
The Baltic Landeswehr was established in Latvia on November 8, 1918, by order of the Governing Council of the Baltic Duchy. The order was signed by Lieutenant General G. von Katen on November 11, 1918. The Landeswehr was subordinate to the German occupying forces. Its pay and armament were also provided by the German Reich until July 1919. The Baltic Landeswehr fought in the Baltic States for the liberation from the Red Army, which occupied Riga in 1919. Among the fighters were numerous Baltic German volunteers. The Baltic Germans in the German army were transferred to the Landeswehr. Additional volunteers were recruited in the German Reich. These volunteers were to receive Latvian citizenship and land for settlement through a treaty with the Ulmanis government. By May 1919, the strength of the Baltic Landeswehr had grown to approximately 6,100 men. Its commander was Major Alfred Fletscher. From February 1919, the Landeswehr was subordinate to the VI Reserve Corps under Rüdiger von der Goltz. On May 22, Riga was liberated. After the Battle of Cesis against the Estonians and the Strasdenhof Armistice of July 3, it was determined that the Landeswehr would be subordinated to the Latvian High Command. The German volunteers from the Reich were forced to leave the unit. The Latvian Brigade, Colonel Balodis, and the Lieven Detachment also left the Baltic Landeswehr. After fighting on the Soviet front until 1920, the Landeswehr was reorganized into the Latvian 13th Tuckum Infantry Regiment on April 1, 1920, and thus disbanded.
The awarded Crosses of Honor were made with screw discs. These bear the award number engraved on the lower cross arm. Crosses with a maker's name can be found on the screw disc or as an abbreviation on the lower cross arm. Well-known manufacturers included: MAKSL.GRAVES.JEST J.EDELHAUS RIGA, W. LAMPE LÜBECK (also with the abbreviation WL and silver stamp), W. MÜLLER POSEN. Screw discs without a maker's name are also known. The size and shape of the nuts, with and without counterplates, vary considerably. The crosses range in size from 41 to 40 mm. In the mid-1920s and 1930s, crosses with pins were also made. Silver examples are likely privately acquired. Pieces by Godet, Berlin, are also known. Miniatures or half-sizes were also produced. These ranged in size from 18 to 22 mm. Such pieces are known to feature a loop, pin, and screw disc.
