Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers, has published over 500 photobooks and is internationally acclaimed. Influenced by his father, a sandal maker and amateur photographer, he began photography. After graduating from the Department of Photographic Printing Engineering at Chiba University's Faculty of Engineering, he joined Dentsu. While taking advertising photos, Araki also explored new forms of photography using the company's equipment, and in the 1970s produced sensational works such as "Oh Japan" and "Sentimental Journey." This book, "Photo Novel," is a photo collection published in 1981. The series begins with a morning at home, then shifts to photographs of his commute to the nearest train station, the station platform, his various rendezvous with women, the Tokyo Marathon, and the Akutagawa and Naoki Prize award ceremonies. The beginning and end of the book contain a conversation with poet and novelist Tomioka Taeko, in which Araki says, "Basically, what I wanted most was to deal with time. As a photographer, you know, you only make one photograph and then it's over. So I think what I want most right now, what I'm craving most, is time." The story is driven by a structure that is conscious of the flow of time.
