The Knipser family's roots lie in the town of Merano in South Tyrol. A certain Gaudenz Knipser (after whom one of the famous red wines is now named) is mentioned in documents from 1573 as a city architect and city councilor of Merano. A nephew of Gaudenz, Johann Goerg, emigrated to the Palatinate in 1615 and became the progenitor of the German branch of the family. Since 1876, the family has lived in Laumersheim, initially with a mixed agricultural business and only from 1970 onwards as a specialized winery. The current owners, Volker and Werner Knipser, began vinification in barriques in the mid-1980s and further specialized in red wines.
