Porcelain vase by Tokuda Yasokichi III 三代徳田八十吉 (Masahiko 正彦)

A wonderful Kutani-ware 九谷焼 porcelain vase by Tokuda Yasokichi III 三代徳田八十吉 (Masahiko 正彦) (1933-2009). The vase has a globular base transcending into a broad cylindrical neck with horizontal lines in relief.

This piece showcases the artist’s iconic saiyu glaze technique, featuring a seamless gradient of aubergine purple, navy blue, azure blue, and yellow hues. The interplay of these colours highlights Tokuda Yasokichi III’s mastery of both form and glaze, creating a mesmerising visual effect.

Signed ‘Kutani Masahiko’ 九谷正彦in dark red by the artist surrounded by impressed rays.

It comes complete with its original signed and sealed wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box), titled ‘Heki mei yu kabin’ 碧明釉花瓶 (Bright blue-green glazed flower vase), signed ‘Kutani Masahiko’ 九谷正彦and sealed ‘Masahiko’ 正彦.

Including a Japanese leaflet, about the exploits of the artist.

Tokuda Yasokichi III (1933–2009), born Masahiko in Ishikawa Prefecture, was a celebrated master of the Kutani pottery tradition. A third-generation potter, he gained international acclaim for reinterpreting traditional Kutani motifs with vibrant, abstract designs and his signature ‘saiyu’ glaze technique. Known for his use of distinctive Kutani-style hues—eggplant, green, and yellow—Tokuda elevated Kutani pottery to new heights.
In 1986, he was designated a Living National Treasure by Ishikawa Prefecture. His works are displayed in prestigious institutions such as the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he received accolades like the Grand Prize of the International Pottery and Porcelain Exhibition.
