The world was shaken, and the story of Seiko, once called a monster, began from the origin known as Hattori Watch Company, which was still unknown to anyone at the time. Japan experienced rapid economic growth from the post-war era into the 1950s, a time that not only saw the highest number of suicides after the war but also the birth of the "three sacred treasures": washing machines, televisions, and refrigerators. It was an era devoted to dreams and hope. In such a time, a watch was a possession of the victors of life, an object of admiration, and many aimed to possess a watch to achieve victory in life. One of the most iconic products of that era was undoubtedly the Seiko brand from Hattori Watch Company.The unique triangular bridge, the iconic design, and the evolution of the Seiko Crown from Cal. 560 through the transition from 19 to 21 jewels became the culmination of this story and marked the origin of Suwa Seikosha’s spirit. It also gave rise to the "Cal. 3140" Seiko Liner, a messenger from Suwa that thwarted the pursuit of the "Feather Cal. 60" from the Second Seiko Company, and ultimately led to the birth of the "Cal. 3180" GS Grand Seiko first model, which roared its name to the world as a representation of Suwa’s spirit.This was followed by the second story, including the 430 and 5722 caliber, the introduction of the "44GS" from the Second Seiko Company, and Seiko’s first automatic winding model from Suwa, "Cal. 6245", in 1967. This marked an unprecedented period of economic growth for Japan. That same year, Seiko achieved an unprecedented feat in both Japanese and Swiss watch history by winning second place in a series at the Neuchâtel Observatory Competition. However, this led to the eventual abolition of ranking in observatory competitions.The Suwa plant introduced its first hand-wound model with a vibration of 36,000, the "45GS", followed by the Second Seiko Company’s first automatic with the same vibration, "61GS", both achieving a monthly difference of ±60 seconds, as well as the legendary Grand Seiko VFA, which maintained high precision. To compete with the world’s diverse watch designs while preserving GS’s precision, the "Cal. 5645" was developed to be thinner and smaller, adapting to various case shapes like square and oval. Nevertheless, Seiko announced quartz to the world in 1973, marking the end of the mechanical GS era with the "5645 caliber" and concluding the passionate battle for craftsmanship waged by Suwa and the Second Seiko Company.In brief, the piece we present today tells the final story of Seiko: the "5645GS", featuring the case reference "5000", with a serial number "330059", indicating it was manufactured in March 1973, produced during the dark times following the oil shock—an exceedingly luxurious solid 18 karat gold model. Notably, the dial features intricate guilloché work, and the front case, with a monocoque structure that might daunt even the likes of Omega and Heuer, is lavishly embellished with guilloché engraving.There is no doubt that this model embodies remarkable elegance. The slim hour and minute hands are a testament to the durability of the GS, synchronized to 28,800 vibrations, fitting for the final model of GS. Although the dial shows slight aging over the years, it remains in quite pristine condition for its age. The exquisite 18-karat solid gold case is in excellent condition, showing no significant scratches.This piece is dedicated to those who continue to convey the soul of Suwa and the Second Seiko Company.
