Chez les Yoruba, les masques Gèlèdè  sont utilisés dans le cadre de mascarades dédiées aux femmes dans leur dimension maternelle.

En fait, il semble que pour les Yoruba du Nigéria, le pouvoir des femmes apparaisse comme ambivalent, certaines pourraient être des sorcières !

L'Ase, qui est l'énergie vitale contenue en chaque être, pourrait devenir exceptionnelle chez certaines femmes et serait capable de menacer l'harmonie sociale.

Seul le pouvoir collectif des ancêtres serait à même de maîtriser celles que les Yoruba appellent «nos mères».

Les mascarades Gèlèdè ont donc pour but de restaurer cette harmonie sociale en «amadouant» la partie féminine de la société. 
Elles sont précédées de grandes cérémonies de nuit, les Efe, au cours desquelles la parole est libre et qui sont, de nos jours, des fêtes où se jouent comédies et satires.
